thursday shopping 2-3-11 (and weekly shopping linky)

It was a very Kraft-centric day at Publix today.  I just knew when I bought that cheese at regular price on Monday that it would end up being on sale this week.  Next time I am going to follow my own advice and wait until it’s on sale!

Oh well, at least I was able to stock up on a ton of cheese & cream cheese this week so we should be set until it goes on sale again.  I wanted to stock up on sour cream too but the store was almost out and the expiration date was only 10 days away.  I bought 2 but I will probably run back in a few days for some more, once they’ve re-stocked.

I decided to take my camera along today, and while trying to juggle the camera, my list, and my stack of coupons I ended up dropping them all over the floor.  What a mess!  That’s what I get for too much multitasking, I suppose.

Trouble was in a very good mood at the store, which made it a fun trip.

Here is what I got:

At Publix I spent $37.49 for $143.56 worth of groceries, a savings of 74%.

Note: I used a lot of coupons from Guy’s Game Day Playbook, which I found when I stopped by a Kroger store while in Nashville.  I am not sure what other stores are carrying it.  It was located on a display at the front of the store.

Combined with my Walgreens & Publix trips on Sunday & Monday, this week I spent a total of $78.01 for $518.65 worth of groceries and drugstore merchandise, an average savings of 85% for the week.

Oh I hate that! If it makes you feel any better, I forgot to use a produce coupon. I realized I forgot about it as soon as I was in the car. :-)

ok, ruth… one question. do you cook from what you buy, or do you buy based on what you want to cook? the first?

I cook from what is in my stockpile and buy what’s on sale each week to keep my stockpile full (and full of variety.) Does that make sense? When you start couponing it takes a while to build up a really plentiful & varied stockpile–2-4 months–but once you’ve established it, there is a lot of food to choose from (the stockpile includes frozen items), and it is pretty easy to keep it stocked.

Tonight, for example, we had grilled cheeseburgers/veggie burgers with mashed potatoes, (weird combo, I know, but I went to the dentist today and soft food sounded good), and fresh watermelon. Even though I went shopping today, the only thing I used from today’s trip was some of the cheese and sour cream. Everything else came from my stockpile (except the watermelon, which we bought at a farmer’s market on Sunday.)

It took me a long time to get used to cooking from what I have instead of planning my meals and then shopping, but it has gotten a lot easier with time. Sorry for such a long answer! I am planning a post on stockpiling next week that will hopefully explain it more. :-) xo

OK, so awesome!! Thanks for your sweet comment Ruth. When I was texting you today, Soph was at the doctor. She got 3 shots and had both ears flushed out…she can hear again, yay!! She was really sad and we had to hold her down though, not fun.

Have fun w/ Trouble. :) Love her.

Your daughter is sooo adorable! Looks like you had a really fun trip! I admire the ladies who can pull off a shopping trip with coupons and a baby in tow. I imagine it is definitely a great feat and worth applauding.
