manatees, ice-cream, & some really hot wings {a mini road trip}

We took a little family mini road trip yesterday.  It was a great way to spend a Sunday.

We first went to see the Manatees at the Tampa Electric viewing center.  It was pretty cool.  It was also free, which made it even cooler!

Do you ever wish your kid could wear a sign that said “I dressed myself today?”  Princess insisted on wearing her slippers instead of shoes.  Whatever.

After the Manatees we headed to Munchies 420 Cafe in Sarasota.  It is semi-famous, at least to us, thanks to an episode of Man vs. Food that we watched a while ago.

Husband has been wanting to try their “Fire in the Hole” challenge ever since.  After reading the rules, I was a little afraid for him.  10 of the hottest wings on the planet in 20 minutes.  CRAZY!

Then when I saw them, I was a LOT afraid.  Don’t they look hot?

He had to sign a waiver in order to be allowed to eat them.  He also had to eat them at the counter, over a large foil mat, so that none of the oil would drop anywhere.  Yikes!

Even so, he was pretty confident.  Husband likes spicy food.  A lot.  When we go for Thai food he asks them to make it hotter than the hottest they’ve ever made it, and he still complains that it isn’t spicy enough.  I like spicy food too, but the food he eats makes me cry.

He wasn’t allowed to wipe his fingers with a napkin–he had to lick them.

 It looked painful.

He managed to eat one before he gave in. (But he’s still a winner to us!)

After he had recovered (and it took a while) we went for ice cream at a fun, quirky little place called McClain’s right next door.  The service was fabulous and the homemade ice cream was delish!  It was the perfect way to end a very fun day.

What did y’all do this weekend?  Have you ever done any sort of crazy eating challenge? How did it end?

WHEW! Those things look deadly! I can’t stand anything spicy. My husband however, loves hot stuff.. I can salsa for him with Habaneros in it even! We grow our own every summer.. Course I just found at Mariano’s fresh market yesterday some Ghost Chile peppers.. supposedly the HOTTEST ont he plant.. they are dried.. so I’ve got rubber gloves and am going to grind them up.. and put some of it in taco dip for him to take to work. We’ll see how well he does with those! lol .. BWW does a similar contest, he won’t enter it tho.. he likes to take his time eating them.. Wild.. INSANE! Just the smell makes my eyes water! :)

Ghost peppers are exactly what were in the sauce! Be careful! :-)

Oh my gosh! lol… I made taco dip and my husband LOVED It.. I’m sure the sourcream and cream cheese took some of the heat off.. But he did try a few flakes with nothing and he said it was HOT! But he liked it alot, so i guess it’s a go! :)

She had an unfortunate run-in with the kitchen counter a few days ago and cut her eyebrow. No stitches required, thankfully, just steri-strips to hold it closed. She thinks it makes her look pretty cool!

First, Suzana – I am sure Princess is just waiting to reveal her new eyebrow piercing…. ;) )

Ruth – this made Hubby and I laugh so hard. The whole spicy wing challenge pics are too funny. I do like spicy food but NOT to the point I can’t taste what I am eating because I just burned my face off!!
Awesome post – looks like a fun day!! (mmmm… soft serve).

    Have a great week!

LOL Claire :-) Yes, we are the kind of people who would let our 5 year old get her eyebrow pierced. After all, we let her wear slippers in public and take her to grubby college restaurants where everything on the menu is deep-fried. What’s a little body piercing among friends?

Wow! It looks like you all had a great day! I live in Sarasota and the 420 and McClain’s are two of my favorite places to go. I hope your hubby has recovered. Those wings are DANGEROUS!!!!

    Have a great one!
