captiva island beach weekend {hello, tropical storm debby}

My friends LeeAnn and Melissa and I have talked about vacationing together for almost 2 years now, and this past weekend was the first time that all 3 families could go to the same place at the same time.  We booked our weekend at South Seas Island Resort months ago, and we were all excited.  Really excited.

So we weren’t going to let a little thing like Tropical Storm Debby stand in our way of a good time.

Oh sure, when most people think “Beach Vacation” they think of basking in the sun, pina colada in hand, taking only the occasional break to cool off in the ocean or perhaps mix it up and lay by the pool for a bit.  And to be perfectly honest, that was the vision I had too, but about 5 minutes into our drive, when the rain started coming down in sheets, it was evident we’d need to adjust our expectations.

So adjust we did.  And you know what?  We had a blast!

 Even without a single ray of sunshine the entire weekend, it was wonderful to just be able to kick back with our friends and enjoy each other’s company.  I don’t think we got the best first impression of South Seas–it is hard to see what any resort has to offer in the pouring down rain–but hopefully this will be the first of many more other group vacations to come.

This was also the last weekend of my Online SnapShop photography workshop.  I have had so much fun learning how to shoot fully in manual mode these past few weeks!  If you are looking to improve your photography skills, I would highly recommend it!  {Thanks again, Ashley!}

Have you ever had a vacation weather disaster?  How did you make the best of it?

    How fun to go on vacation all together. I’m sure you will cherish those memories forever. Those beach pictures of your daughters and your husband are really great. Did someone take the one of all of you, or did you use the timer? I’m curious about how you got it to turn out so good using the window as a backdrop. Whenever I take pictures towards the window they turn out dark. Did you use a flash?

      Hey Susan, I used the timer to take the group shot. I used a low shutter speed to make sure the faces were exposed, but I also had to use a high ISO (3200) so the picture feels a little grainy and orangey to me–I’m still learning! :-) I could’ve used a flash but I always think flash pictures turn out too harsh.

    I can totally relate to this! We went to Hawaii a few years ago and had bad weather almost the whole week. On the very last day the sun finally came out, and then we all got burned because we were trying so hard to get get as much sun as possible. LOL. We did try to make the best of it but at the time it was hard not to feel like we got a raw deal. Now we look back and laugh.

    {Kathy} How did we not see all of you at South Seas? We were there at the exact same time. My family had a great time as well–despite the rain. It actually gave us an excuse to rest. With three out of four of mine being teenagers, they didn’t seem to mind sleeping.
    On another note, we MUST get together!
