I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, you can take away my email and my smart phone and my Facebook and my television, and I’ll even make an effort to cut back on the sugar, at least a little bit.
But you can’t have my coffee.
Nope. Not. Gonna. Happen.
I love coffee. Really, I do. So, so, so, so, so, so much. I can’t get enough. I think it might even be my love language.
I can’t help it, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, where we learned to drink Starbucks in our sippy cups and there is literally a drive-up espresso shack on every corner. After moving away, I was shocked to discover that the rest of the country somehow manages to survive without those handy little coffee stands.
And while I’m abdicating all personal responsibility, I also blame Keurig. Is it really my fault that a dark, rich, steaming, perfect cup of coffee is now just a button away? I am powerless to resist.
But I have to admit, there are those days where my stomach starts to churn because I’ve had one (or five) cups too many, where I’m all wound up with no place to go, where I start feeling just a little shaky and full of anxiety, simply because I’ve overindulged in my favorite vice.
And while my vice is definitely coffee, most of us have something, whether it be diet soda, alcohol, tobacco or something else.
According to Prevention.com, too much caffeine can cause fatigue, dehydration, insomnia or interrupted sleep, anxiety, and acid reflux, all of which can make you feel more stressed, not less. And that doesn’t even count the financial toll that those daily $5 lattes are taking on your budget.
So what is the “safe” amount of caffeine? According to the smart people at the Mayo Clinic, 200-300 milligrams of caffeine per day—the equivalent of 2-4 cups of coffee—is perfectly reasonable. Any more than that and it might be time to cut back just a little.
Hmmmmm…..Perhaps a little moderation is in order?

For the rest of the month, cut your coffee (or caffeine) consumption by half. Try drinking decaf or tea or even just water instead. Then sometime today, walk or exercise for at least 15 minutes. Share what you did with us in the comments below or on Facebook!
