i’m trying to get started, but i’m not sure how to label the tabs? by date, by product, catagory? PLEASE HELP lol
Ruth May 3, 2011 at 11:12 am
It depends how you want to sort. If you are clipping them and using a binder, sort by category. If you are filing the entire insert, sort by date. Here is some more info on getting started: http://www.livingwellspendingless.com/beginners-guide-to-coupons/thebeginners-guide-to-coupons-2/part-one-how-to-start/

Hi Ruth,
I’ve been reading your website for a couple weeks now. (Mostly, in my spare time, mind you.) I’ve read your whole 8-week program, and am working on reading all of these links, and everything else that I can get my hands on.
I also am a member on http://www.weusecoupons.com, and have linked and favourited the websites you’ve put out.
I love the way your stockpile looks. It’s so organized and pretty, and I hope that one day my stockpile will look similar. (Love the storage for your baking supplies too!) My fiance and I have been couponing for a little while now, and he first started reading your blogs and such, and then graduated up. (He’s looking the same way I am, for anything tipwise that can help us learn better.)
As for methods? I like the binder method. I don’t mind taking the time to clip coupons, and like you said about your stockpile, I like to be able to visually see what coupons and products that I have. (I even put the different types of one type of product in a certain area to keep track of this.)
As for my experiences…we first started trying out all this, because we saw Extreme Couponing. We knew that coupons were great ways to save, but like most people, we never really bothered. I didn’t know I could save THAT much, and I assume that neither did he.
We started at our local supermarket near Easter. I believe it was the 21st when we first had our first savings run. It was exhilarating. We had found out that you could get 30 turn key items at Harvey’s Supermarket, and get $15 off of your purchase of those items. I found, as well, a sale on Friskies wet cat food cans for 10/$4. They were also turn key items. That meant that we could buy 30 cans of cat food for $12 and end up getting $15 back! They would be paying us!
My fiance already had a store key, and so I went up to the store and got my own. We bought 60 cans of cat food. With our money back we ended up buying 2 packages of ground beef as well! Over the next week we went back to Harvey’s over and over, even going to different towns to purchase items. They would even give us a $2 store coupon for pet food purchases of $8. This ended up giving us $5 back each time! EACH!
We ended up getting $648 worth of stuff for $37 out of pocket. It was amazing! We still have several of those items, and we’ve been working out Rite Aid the past week, and this week as well. I am not sure what our yearly savings is up to date right now. He would have to figure it up, but I can say, I’m never going back to the way I used to shop.
Jenni.
