our homeschool planner

I created this homeschool planner for our own use after trying a few other homeschool planners.  I was frustrated that I couldn’t find anything to incorporate all the different facets of our homeschool day and week.  The responsibilities of a homeschool parent go far beyond the academic realm; we are not only teacher, but mentor, spiritual guide, chef, head crafter, athletic coach, moral compass, housekeeper, & financial provider.

Every family is different, but in our house, school does not start and stop at a certain time; instead, we learn as we live, and life must still go on.  This planner is my own way of keeping it all straight in my head.  You are welcome to use part of it or all of it, and I welcome your feedback if you find something that works even better for your family!  (And to read more about our own homeschool journey, check out why we homeschool or how I discovered I was doing it all wrong.)

To set it up, I keep it all in a 3 ring binder divided into 7 sections.  The first tab is for our homeschool day pages, followed by a tab for student goals, and then 1 tab for each quarter.  The final tab has lined paper for note keeping.

{Get the the printable PDF file of the entire planner here}

Daily Section

I like to wake up very early and start my morning with devotions and prayer, followed by a few minutes of filling out this daily planner.  It helps keep me focused on the priorities of the day, reminding me of what we need to accomplish and setting the tone for a calm and peaceful day.  We do a new memory verse each week, so I find that re-writing it each morning helps me to remember it better myself.  The kids are FAR better at memory work than I am!

Student Goal Section

I print one of these for each child for the year, then set goals each quarter.  For our family it is just as important to develop their character as their academic skills, so we include goals for both.

Quarterly Planning Section

For this section I print the Quarterly Academic planner on the first page, then print the weekly planning sheet and the weekly academic planner back-to-back (x12 weeks) so that when the book is open I can see the 2 weekly planning pages side by side.  It takes me about an hour or so on Sunday evening to make my plan for the coming week.

Cover Pages

There are 2 cover pages, one for my planner and one for the kids’ binders, which I use to keep a record of our work.

Oh my! I have tried planners. I’ve made planners. I’ve improvised, scheduled, and combined to create franken-planners. I’ve given up and just not planned. But THIS is a thing of beauty. I look through the pages and wonder if you’ve been spying on me, or reading my brain. :D Yes, homeschooling families are all unique, but you have just presented me with the perfect-fit planner for my misfit family. Thank you.

I noticed you only have math and language arts listed in the weekly academic game plan. Hands on could satisfy other areas but why is history, geography, science, etc not listed? Just curious. The planner is very well put together, cute design!

For the daily section, how many daily pages do you put in your binder? The picture looks like a thinner binder, but printing enough pages for everyday will be a very thick planner. Thanks.

I <3 THIS PLANNER! I just could not spring for the expensive planners, and couldn't find any other free or almost free planner that would fit our needs. What you have created is absolutely perfect and I want to thank you SO warmly for sharing it! I did wonder……I am also wanting to make a sheet for reading logs and various resources, like from pinterest, etc. for the back of my binder. Would you mind sharing what scribble font you used? Or possibly make an 'our resources' page to match the rest of this amazing planner? I'd be so very appreciative! Again, thanks for sharing such an awesome resource!

This is awesome and just what I was looking for. It has everything (almost) I wanted in a planner. We, too, learn as we live. Is it possible to get a blank “Our Academic Game Plan/week of:” sheet? I would like to add History/Science and Art/Music to it since we have lessons we do and I’d love to have it all in the same place.

We are just starting homeschool this year for our 4 year old son. We had him in preschool and were not liking the way his teacher was handling things regarding problem students. We had our mind set with homeschooling in the first place, but this was the icing on the cake for us to fully commit to homeschooling. I was a little lost as to how I would be planning his schedule, but this planner here is absolutely perfect for me to get started! THank you for sharing with us!

I just started homeschooling my 6 year old this week. I have been browsing online for hours looking for the perfect printable that were both super functional and stylish for logs and overall upkeep of objectives. Let me tell you, these printables are LIFE SAVERS! Before I found you I was going to resort to making my own sheets, but yours are much better (and sooo much easier– you are amazing!!) and I cannot believe all the thought and practicalness in this set! I need organization to function and these cannot be more “me” in template too. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

PS. I’m not sure if another person as already asked, but do you happen to have a blank “academic game plan” sheet, so I can insert my own subjects along that margin? Your PDF has made my night amazing. Its all printed and fabulous! :)

    THANK YOU!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I started homeschooling last year and hated and prayed for me to be able t send them to private school. Well God allowed my prayer to be answered and they went to private school for two months. It was a wonderful Christian school but my oldest 6 year old daughter begged to go back to homeschooling because she missed being at home with her family. How was I to argue with that? So we started homeschooling again and today O was feeling very overwhelmed in how to keep my house clean, laundry done, meals cooked, deviated done and make sure my girls were being educated well. This schedule/planner is exactly what I need to line it all out. I had moved away from making lists because I found myself too driven and exhausted and frustrated tryin to get my lists all done. Now I had been floundering in the I have so much to do and not a plan to get it done. This brings me a solution. Thank you so much. P

These are wonderful. Does anyone know how to download one page at a time so that I can try and change the size of each page. I’m working with a half page planner and would like to turn these into 5.5 x 8.0 unless there is already that size available somewhere, even for purchase? Thanks for your help.

Wow, this looks fantastic! Sort of the-big-picture planner that I was looking for – and yet allows space for our own needs. I live in a country with exactly 42 homeschooling families (statistics as of January 2014), and there is very little tradition, resources, etc. Thanks again for sharing this wonderful work.

It’s not exactly what I would lay out for myself, but it’s the best overall homeschool planner I’ve seen and I’ve been homeschooling for years…starting with my older granddaughter, who is 24 and I’m now down to one student, my youngest grandson, who will be 9 in a few months. We do basically “unschooling” once past the things you have to know to do anything (if that makes sense!) and life long learning should be instilled into everyone! Actually, I homeschooled someone else years ago and was a public school volunteer for 20 years before that. (My children attended a neighborhood elementary school that was literally run by the teachers and the parents, the way ALL schools should be. Not any more, unfortunately.)

I have chosen to homeschool both of them and if things work out the way I hope them to, I will begin my yongest son for preschool next year. :) Your schedule and planning tools have allowed me to taken a sigh of relief, alittle because I have been feeling anxious on how to begin and be able to make sure the boys will not be miss anything. Thank you so very much. May God continue to bless you. Sincerly, Christina Forist

I stumbled across your planner this morning while looking for a holiday planner…in the midst of a home school emotional breakdown. We are new to this and hit my wall this morning; I have been trying to appease a classical school approach and haven’t given myself enough room to find the right fit for us. You inspired me to redirect and try again; God places people and circumstances in our path at just the right time so thank you for sharing!
Is there any chance I could get an editable version so I don’t try to concoct a franken planner of my own?
