thursday shopping

Wow!  You guys REALLY had an an opinion yesterday about my dress options!  It was so great to see what everyone thought, and I really, really appreciate all the feedback!  I still haven’t made a final decision–I may bring them all–but I am leaning towards 1 or 2.  Or 6.  Or maybe 5.  But I like 4 too.  Oh shoot….decisions are so hard!  At least 3 is definitely a no. ;-)

Almost everything on my list was a “staple item” this week–milk, eggs, yogurt, toilet paper, condensed soup–so I thought it would be fun for Princess & I to make a video about saving on those type of items.

One of the biggest complaints I hear from people who don’t use coupons is “I don’t eat all those processed foods, and they just don’t make coupons for the things I buy.”  The truth is that while it IS hard to find coupons for certain items, it doesn’t mean you can’t still save on other items.  I know I probably sound like a broken record, but any savings is better than none!

Here is what I got:

At Publix I spent $55.86 for $134.05 worth of groceries, a savings of 59%.

This week has been a little crazy!   Several of you have asked to see the news clips (which is so very sweet of you.)  The Wednesday appearance is available to watch here or you can check out the Thursday spot here.

I usually get up verrrrry early (as in, the middle of the night for most people) to get as much done as possible before the girls wake up, so my regular schedule was definitely off this week.  Luckily I have the BEST husband in the whole world who does a fantastic job taking over the hectic morning routine when mommy’s not around.  {Thanks honey!}

I will be on WINK again on Wednesday, October 26th at 7:20am to talk about planning Thanksgiving Dinner on a budget, and on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7:20am to talk about Black Friday coupon deals.

But now on to shopping….I had a rare moment of shopping impulsivity yesterday when I decided to get both a spaghetti squash and a butternut squash.  They just sounded so fall-ish and yummy.  They were both on sale for $0.99 a pound, but man, those suckers are heavy!  I also needed milk and because I was in a hurry and couldn’t find the CVS list I had so carefully prepared  on Sunday (but then not used due to our boating adventure), I decided to just get it at Publix.

The combination of the squash and milk definitely brought my savings percentage way down, which is a good lesson if you are wondering why you’re not saving more at the grocery store.  I normally pick out the very best deals & most rock bottom prices each week, and then stick to ONLY what is on my list.  Just a few impulse buys or non-sale items will really make a difference in your bottom line.

That said, I certainly don’t feel even a little bit bad for buying squash and milk.  We still have to eat and (say it with me) ANY savings is better than none!

Here is what I got:

At Publix I spent $33.89 for $93.92 worth of groceries, a savings of 64%

a BIG announcement: thursday shopping 9-22-11 {& weekly shopping linky}

September 22, 2011

I had a fun little shopping trip today.  There wasn’t too much I needed to get but I was psyched to see those Orville Redenbacher pop-up bowls on sale.  I love those things!   I  also made a little video today, but it wasn’t to show here.  It is for my NEW…(wait for it)…. ONLINE [...]

September 15, 2011

Is it just me or has this week flown by?  I can hardly believe the weekend is almost here! I had a fun little shopping trip this morning.  After Sunday’s fiasco with the girls, it sure was nice to shop all by myself while they were at school.  I was so relaxed that I even [...]

extreme couponing for normal {and nice} people: thursday shopping 9-1-11 {& weekly shopping linky}

September 1, 2011

It was just announced that TLC’s Extreme Couponing Season 2 will begin September 28th.  I know a many of you probably found this site after watching the first season, and sometimes I feel a little torn about the show. On the one hand, TLC’s Extreme Couponing has introduced a lot of people who were struggling [...]

thursday shopping 8-25-11 {& weekly shopping linky}

August 25, 2011

One of the most common questions I hear from new couponers is “why aren’t I saving more on food?”  The thrill of free toothpaste and deodorant–while still fun–loses a bit of luster the moment we realize we still have to eat. It is super important, especially at the beginning, not to fall into the trap [...]

thursday shopping 8-18-11 {& weekly shopping linky}

August 18, 2011

I had no idea last week’s shopping trip would be so controversial!  Okay, so maybe 2 slightly snarky comments does not a controversy make, but you guys are usually so overwhelmingly positive that it did throw me for a loop.  Mostly because last week’s shopping trip was actually fairly “normal”–bread, eggs, yogurt, frozen pizza–at least [...]

August 11, 2011

I headed off to Asheville, North Carolina today to attend BEcoming, a small conference being organized by two fellow DealPros, the fashionably frugal Jen Schmidt of Balancing Beauty and Bedlam and superstar Jenny Martin of Southern Savers, as well as the ever-amazing Nester from Nesting Place.  I have admired all three of these ladies for [...]

August 4, 2011

I had every intention of making it to Publix first thing this morning, but I just couldn’t seem to pull myself together!  Ever have one of those days?  I’ll blame it on the heat. There wasn’t a lot I needed or wanted today besides some cheap peanut butter (yum!)  I did want to get some [...]
