Is it just me, or does it seem like everyone in the world is busier than they have ever been before? Seriously! In the past couple of weeks, nearly every friend I have talked to has said something to the effect of, “I’d really like to [INSERT GOAL], I just can’t seem to find the time. Things are SO crazy right now!”
It has also come in the form of, “I’d really like to slow down so I could focus on some of those big tasks, but it’s just not in the cards right now,” and “Man, I would love to get together, but I’m just so busy right now!”
And honestly, I get it. I really do. I am the last person to judge, because I too sometimes feel like I am barely holding it together.
But the way I look at, we each have 3 basic options when it comes to dealing with a life that has become over-stretched, over-filled, and over-complicated, a life that has us so wrapped up in just trying to keep up that we can’t seem to find any time for those things we really want to do.
The first option is to do nothing—to maintain the status quo, and to keep running ourselves ragged trying to be everything to everyone. This is the option that feels the safest, because it is the option that is most familiar. And besides, we’re so caught up in trying to keep up that we can’t really imagine that there could be another way.
The second option is to drop everything and “check out.” This is often what happens when we reach the burnout stage—that moment of desperation when we just can’t take it anymore. Sometimes it happens involuntarily when we get sick and our body forces us to retreat, or when a crisis forces us to reevaluate and re-prioritize.
The third option is to find some sort of middle ground—a way of reevaluating and re-prioritizing without letting your whole life fall apart in the process. Usually this comes in the form of a new system or better tools to help you manage all the pieces of your busy life.
So my question for you is this: What option are you currently choosing?
But more importantly, which one do you want to choose?
I’m guessing it’s C.
Because let’s face it—C is the only option that allows us to create a life we LOVE, one that isn’t filled with the overwhelm of running ourselves ragged, and one where we haven’t just given up because we’re feeling burnt out.
But here’s the thing—C takes work too. It takes intentionality. It takes a willingness to make sometimes hard choices, and a willingness to take control of your own destiny.
Even so, it is WORTH IT!
