There are plenty of wonderful recipes out there that are downright delicious. And then there are those rare treats that rise above “delicious” to some exclusive higher category, officially known as “Food Crack.” Like a drug, you know it counts as food crack when no matter how much you eat, you just can’t get enough, (even when you know it might kill you in the end!)
This recipe, my friends, is Food Crack at its very best.
DIG DEEPER
Get a jump start on your week by prepping on the weekend! Your family’s breakfasts, lunches, and dinners will be a breeze all week.
I got the recipe from my dear friend Debbie who makes dozens of loaves every Christmas to give away to her friends and family. She is well known and much beloved for this effort, so I was, quite frankly, amazed when she agreed to share her special recipe with me so that I could share it with you all.
All she said was, “Food this good needs to be shared.”
Debbie, you rock. And amen to that!
Here is what you need:
3 cups all-purpose flour 2 1/4 cups sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoons poppyseeds 3 eggs 1 1/2 cups milk 1 1/8 C. veg. oil 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract 1 1/2 teaspoons butter extract 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract Glaze 3/4 cups sugar 1/4 cups orange juice 1/2 teaspoons almond extract 1/2 teaspoons butter extract 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extractStep 1: Mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and poppy seeds together in bowl; set aside.
Step 2: In separate mixing bowl, whisk eggs, milk, oil, and extracts until eggs are well blended.
Step 3: Add dry ingredients to the egg mixture and blend well, scraping sides and bottoms of bowl, but do not over mix.
Step 4: Pour into 2 greased loaf pans; bake at 350 degrees for 55-60 minutes.
Step 5: To make glaze, mix all glaze ingredients in small saucepan; heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let thicken for a few minutes, then brush over cooled loaves, making sure to get plenty of glaze in the “crack” of the bread.

Oh, yum! What is it about the orange and almond flavorings that pair so well together? I need to try this recipe soon! My “food crack” recipes vary depending on my mood, but generally involve chocolate. Or homemade bread.
love your recipe, will definitely try it later! 🙂
I love this recipe just as I have loved the previous recipes you posted, this would be perfect for my family and I think they will love it as well. I was wondering though I you have more recipes where I can use snack bars, I recently discovered these amazing health bars which was made by Nouri, one of the companies that give back by providing one meal to one child in an impoverished nation. I want to help the cause and come up with quick healthy snacks for kids as well. Thank you and I look forward to your help.
this looks delicious. The recipe does not state what size loaf pan to use. Can you help?
This looks absolutely delicious. I am definitely making this ASAP!
Can I use regular butter instead of the extract?
What size loaf pans did you use?
I made this over the weekend. Delish! I halved it to make one loaf and added about a tablespoon of fresh orange zest to the batter. I glazed the loaf three times, allowing easy application to dry completely before brushing on the next coat. This is a real keeper. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
I’m not a poppy seed person but this recipe is absolutely YUMMY!!
Also 350 degrees??? What setting Fahrenheit or Celsius????
