With just a couple of ingredients and five minutes to whip together. It is the perfect side to any hearty soup or stew. But also makes for a great breakfast, afternoon snack or a midnight snack for that matter! But let’s be honest, we all know that bread out of the oven smothered in butter is the all time BEST!

Ready to make Irish soda bread? Here are the ingredients: flour, buttermilk, sugar, salt, raisins, eggs, butter, baking powder and soda.

Here is what you need:

3 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter
1 cup raisins (optional)
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg

Mix your dry ingredients in a bowl first.

Step 1: Pre-heat oven to 400. line baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and baking powder.

Whisk in some softened butter to the dry ingredients.

Step 2: Then add softened butter to dry ingredients until it is well mixed.

Mix the buttermilk and egg together in a small bowl.

Step 3: In a small bowl mix together the buttermilk and egg.

Add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients and mix together to form a dough.

Step 4: Then add buttermilk and egg mixture into dry ingredients until well mixed.

Fold raisins into your soda bread.

Step 5 : Then mix raisins with a little bit of flour and add raisins into batter. Knead them into dough batter.

Roll the dough into a ball on a floured surface. Then split the dough with a cross on top.

Step 6: Place dough on a floured work surface and knead. Shape into a round loaf. Then place on parchment covered cookie sheet and cut a cross in the top. bake for 15 minutes then reduce heat to 350 and cook for another 15-20 minutes.

When the bread is done, cool it on a wire rack until it's ready to slice and enjoy!

Step 7: Let cool on cooling rack, then cut and serve with butter and a nice cup of coffee.
